THE CHALLENGE … AND THE BEAUTY OF EDUCATING IN PANDEMIC TIMES

After the suspension of classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Brazil and the world began to experience a new experience school from early childhood education to higher education: classes online.

This whole process is not being easy, and it is a great challenge for parents, teachers, educational institutions and students. We need to understand that education, as it is historically and socially constructed, takes place mainly in the relationship established between peers and this aspect is what has been experienced differently, at a distance. Furthermore, no one was prepared for what happened.

When the child goes to school, he will not only learn didactic content, but he will develop other aspects of which he has been deprived, such as relating with colleagues and teachers, playing, learning social rules, among many others; and it is this hidden curriculum that she misses.

We can also point out that today’s children were not prepared to have autonomy, responsibility and to handle their tasks alone, requiring full-time support from parents while attending classes, which makes the daily routine and work of adults difficult.

As we have seen on social networks, teachers have become youtubers, parents have become teachers, and some schools are still thinking of just dealing with content that is often not focused on the reality of children and their families.

In addition to all this, we have children with learningdisabilities, sensory and physical disabilities, inattention and hyperactivity, autism spectrum disorder and other characteristics that demand individualized care, which, if at school, occurred online is very difficult to be attended to.

Putting even more difficulties in our current reality, we have students who do not have access to digital technology, do not have a computer or cell phone, do not have internet. Teachers also do not have this technology or have not been trained to use it.

So what to do in the face of all these difficulties?

First of all, parents and teachers, should focus only on school content, there are many things that the child can learn and that will take him / her throughout his life, besides, in the routine of the house there can also be Portuguese, mathematics, history, geography and science. And what about the entrance exam? Ah, this one has her whole life to learn.

Working on children’s autonomy, believing that they are capable, making them the authors of their learning, being close without doing for them, is the great challenge. If done this way, the online classes will be held in a light, even fun, as it is a time to meet with friends and teachers. Children’s tantrums occur when they fail to understand the importance and why of what they do, they get frustrated, not feeling supported.

Giving responsibilities within the child’s age permits, in school tasks and in the routine of the home. Understanding your limit and your child’s limit is essential. Choose the battles worth fighting for. Your main weapon should be dialogue, talking to children is important so that they understand what they are experiencing and feel safe.

Teachers must work in a playful way, without putting pressure on the child or family, presenting the content they deem necessary, but understanding that we live in a different moment, and that when everything passes, and will pass, contents can be resumed and learned. Understanding, empathy, listening to the child and family should be the watchwords.

Anyway, we can live online education in order to teach our children / students that life often changes our plans, that we need to be flexible and adapt, and that we can face the new reality with unity and dialogue. That must be the lesson to learn!

To reflect, I leave this beautiful speech Rubem Alves:

“If I wereteach a music beauty the child

does not start with scores, notes and agendasThen..

We would hear together the melodies hottest and tell you

about the instruments that make the music

enchanted by the beauty of music, she herself would ask me

to teach her the mystery of those black balls written on five lines,

because the black balls and the five lines are just tools

for the production of musical beauty. The experience of beauty must come before“.
