Entrepreneurship in times of crisis

One of the definitions for the verb “to undertake”, according to the Aurélio Dictionary is: “to try: a risky crossing”. The definition was exposed to microentrepreneurs who participated in the 1st training cycle of the year, “Creating and Strengthening your business”.

Many of those present agreed with the meaning of the verb, exemplifying with their own cases some difficulties experienced by those who decide to open their own business.

The reason for exposing this definition in a room full of microentrepreneurs is to emphasize, even though many already know, the need for planning in professional life.

Never discourage them by fear, but show the common challenges and possible solutions for this risky crossing to take place in the best possible way.

Life is also a risky and unpredictable journey. Today, March 19, 2020, we are experiencing a pandemic of the new coronavirus (Covid-19). The moment is complicated, mainly because it is a new situation. But what to do in situations like this?

We must not let panic paralyze us; on the contrary, we must be calm in order to identify and carry out the most appropriate actions to face this crisis.

The situation requires an immediate reflection on how the money has been spent, both at home and in the enterprise.

At this point, we must ask ourselves: What are the expenses that are really necessary?  In order to answer this, it is necessary to identify all expenses to see the priorities and where there is the possibility of cuts.

Incomes also need to be identified, after all, it is with them that expenses will be paid. When creating the list, another important question appears: can I increase the incomes without increasing the expenses?

Suggestions are welcome, whether building alternatives for the enterprise, such as sales, or including new products for sale, but always having in mind that the time is not for expenses. Use creativity and what you already have!

Many entrepreneurs say they do not know exactly how much they earn or how much they spend, but it is time to try and search all the records to determine what the next steps will be.

Shall we exemplify?

Ana sells brigadeiros (Brazilian dish). She still doesn’t have a store, she makes it at home and sells on request. She uses an internet package on her cell phone to make calls and postings, and her car to make deliveries and buy the necessary products.

This was just an example. Each project has a reality with different expenses and inputs. If you have a physical space and pay rent, this item needs to be described in your spreadsheet. If water and light are not included, they also need to be registered.

Once all expenses are identified and organized, you can visualize the scenario of your financial situation, whether at home or at the enterprise, and this helps you make decisions, such as which expenses you can cut.

The optional expense for Ana is the sticker cards. She knows she can’t change the quality of the chocolate, but she can stop spending on the stickers.

The global crisis that we are experiencing requires a reduction in general expenses, which may not just be the optionals, so it is important to identify all expenses to define priorities.
